During 1995 he attended RAF Newton where he was trained with search dog "Jed" who was the first Passive Body Scanning dog in the Prison Service. On his second day of operational service Phil and Jed had their first arrest. Jed was retired in 2003 after having over 220 operational arrests.

In 1998-1999 Phil successfully completed a Canine Human Interface Course with the Canine Studies Institute in Berkshire.

During 2011 Phil carried out a R &D project to evaluate and train IBAD dogs (Illicit Brewed Alcohol Dogs). The research was so successful that the East of England Region (HMPS) currently have five dual trained IBAD / ADD dogs in service.

Phil was promoted to Custodial Manager in 2012,  as well as continuing in his role as Regional Search Dog  coordinator for the East of England Prison Service.
